Stimulus Discussion and Final Group Decision

In this session each person in my group put forward a stimulus which inspired them and then pitched the idea to the group as well as putting forward movement suggestions and how they would link to the theme. The stimulus I presented to the group was a piece of art called ‘CHEAP.’ by Nicole Dextras (Dextras, 2019), I was inspired by this as it’s a current issue that is impacting on people’s lives and the environment. The art work really intrigued me in the way the fabric is flowing and from the letters, I interpreted that it could be the drinking water and the chemicals from the clothes factories mixing together in the low income villages some clothes are made in. Additionally to this 20% of the worlds water pollution comes from chemical dye (Mina, 2022). Movement that I suggested alongside my inspiration was unison and factory like actions where everyone would be doing the same movements and they would all be very strong simple positions.
The piece we voted to use as our stimulus was a piece about the mental illness schizophrenia, more specifically a piece of art by James Charnley who helped paint a portrait of his brother Bryan Charnley who had schizophrenia. The painting was actually a series of portraits of Bryan Charnely who wanted to stop taking his medication to see what hallucinations would occur and then develop into paintings (Charlnley, 2022). In the piece we are developing we want to explore the illness its self, as well as the art and how we can show the hallucinations through obscure movement. An idea which I have thought about for a potential solo in the piece is using a quiet and calm music with chaotic and impulsive movement to confer the hallucinations and the reality, in which the music would play reality where everything isn’t as busy compared to the movement. This could be created by using a piece of music that compliments the hectic movement and then you would transfer the movement to the simpler music. The first portrait is the first day Charnley stopped taking medication and the second portrait is the 10th day.
