Final Performance Evaluation

Image
I have confidence in that my group choreographic piece went well and was successful because we presented the movement with passion and clear dynamics. I could clearly see the contrast in dynamics as the smooth moments had a strong change in the sharper and more precise movements. To add we all moved very well in unison and the duet between Eabha and I was performed in a strong manner which contained a lot of clarity for the story line as I have observed the video of the performance. This specific duet seemed to hold the theme of the piece very well, however in comparison to this section I would’ve liked to see more intention with the other sections. Something I would’ve changed to the unison sections that didn’t hold a great amount of purpose is, using physical contact and becoming a unit like how the brain and the body is all connected and working together to function. (Pilgrim.O, 2022) Overall I trust that we performed our piece very well with a good deal of intention and purpo...

Reflecting on our group starting objectives

Image
Our original intentions for the piece were to portray a pedestrian, paranoid and anxious theme at the beginning of the piece, then an atmosphere of frustration and chaos, to disconnect and a sense of unfamiliarity and to end the piece the audience should feel relief and calm. These we’re all the feelings we still want the audience to experience, we also want other intentions such as the theme of schizophrenia and slowly losing your mind to clearly come across. (Pilgrim.O, 2022) I believe that we achieved our original intentions well because we showed a battle between the schizophrenia and the mind as well as a solo that focussed on the paranoia that comes with schizophrenia. Even though there was choreography that expressed the theme well, there were definitely sections where we could’ve replaced choreography that didn’t involve enough meaning as I felt it didn’t hold enough intention. It became quite clear that as a group we were very polite with each other’s ideas and we needed t...

Continuation of choreography

Image
Recently we have been working on the final section of our piece, finding different concepts and movement to portray the end of Bryan Charnley’s life. We wanted to convey a theme of surrendering and peacefulness he seemed to feel once he’d stopped taking his medication. The movement we used for this section includes high releases and leaning in to others because my character is becoming unstable and lifeless. My character in the ending is Bryan Charnley himself and the rest of the group are playing a pedestrian human role that acknowledge my characters death but continue to move on with their lives. We originally had the idea of myself being lifted in the Christ position and walking off to represent a funeral and the grief of Bryan Charnley, however a member in the group has injured their back and was struggling to lift me, therefore we changed the ending to something more meaningful and intentional. This new choreography was the piece described in the previous paragraph. The mus...

Inspiration and feedback

Image
I observed Hofesh Shechter’s online piece of ‘Sun’(Sadler’s Wells, 2013) for inspiration as I admire how unique and recognisable his work is. He uses signature movements, for example a lot of hunched over movements are featured in his pieces. I suggested using ‘Sun’ for inspiration to my group because the piece includes small, simple movements like quickly touching parts of the face and then freezing after touching the mouth as though they were holding onto words. I believed that something like this could really work in our piece as the audience tends to pay attention to minor movements because there aren’t any distractions and if everyone in the piece does it in unison it can become something very powerful. As a group we then worked on where and what we could do to create a similar impact, so we decided that we would stand still and zip up our mouths and use a locking motion and drop the key, the intention for this small sequence is that we are self-conscious of others hearing our t...

Composition and structure

Image
In the last few choreographic sessions we’ve been focusing on piecing together motifs and smoothing out the structure to bring a clear performance the audience. As mentioned previously we have solos and duets in the piece, where we discussed what it meant to have these solos/duets and if there could be any intention behind a trio or quartet. I think there’s no significance behind a trio or quartet since the solo represents Bryan Charnley and an outside perspective of what he would’ve been going through and the duet conveys the mind and schizophrenia battling against each other, which portrays the perspective inside his head. (Pilgrim.O, 2022) In an earlier session we have established the structure of the piece, however in the most current rehearsal we discussed what the next sections of choreography would be. From this discussion we decided to choreograph two counts of eight individually and the arrive at the following rehearsal with those phrases so that we can piece them toget...

Motif Development

Image
To build our piece we started to talk about the structure and where we would ideally want to place solos, duets and group sections. We discussed that we would have two solos, two group pieces formed duets, one duet with the rest of the performers off stage and the rest of the performance would be group sections. (Pilgrim.O, 2022) I put myself forward for a solo piece which I have started to choreography and as a group we discussed how long the solo would be and where in the music we wanted it to be performed. In the process of creating my solo I found it very difficult to choreograph to the music even though I thought the music was good for the theme of the piece. To solve this issue I filmed myself improvising to music that I enjoyed improvising to whilst thinking about the stimulus and what movements would deliver the idea of my character dealing with Schizophrenia. The reason why I struggled with creating choreography to the music being used in the piece was because the music ...

Chance method

Image
At the start of this session we were all asked to think of twelve words that described our piece, after we selected a variety of words we sectioned the words in to different chapters of our performance. For example the first section is conveying the pedestrian and ordinary side to life most view and then creating a contrast with anxious and paranoid actions to highlight the way someone with schizophrenia may feel. Some people with schizophrenia can feel as though they are being watched or hear voices that aren’t really there (Hearing voices and mental illness., 2022). (Pilgrim.O, 2022) After selecting words for different sections of the piece, we were given a task to create four different movements for each word, and then we would link all movements together to make a sequence. Additionally we were asked to number the movement 1-12 and then rolled a 12 sided dice twelve times to get a new sequence, this task was chance method intertwined with fragmentation since we were taking a ...
